The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 234 and the Downtown Guelph Business Association are now accepting applications for the sponsorship of a Veteran's Banner in our HONOUR OUR VETERANS BANNER PROGRAM. We are excited to share this initiative with you and look forward to your participation.
Through the displaying of the banners, we hope to engage the community in honouring and remembering local veterans through an initiative that will ensure continued recognition and respect throughout future generations.
2021 SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS 15 JULY 2021
New submissions will be accepted yearly, as this will be an ongoing project that will no doubt grow over the next few years, as we honour all our local veterans.
This program is to Honour ALL Veterans who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces or Commonwealth forces who have been honourably discharged from service or killed in action and who must have connection to Guelph by residence or family residence of a Veteran living/serving elsewhere. Veteran can be living or deceased. Legion membership by the honouree or the sponsor is not a requirement for participation in the program.
Each banner will highlight a specific Veteran, and the Banners will be hung on light posts in the downtown area as approved by the City of Guelph, each year in October beginning in 2021 and will be taken down after Remembrance Day. The Banners will then be stored at the Guelph Legion until the next year.
Banners are printed on both sides with the same information with a standard design and colours.
Shown here is the Banner sponsored by the Guelph Legion in honour of Lt Col John McCrae.
Currently there are 168 lamp posts available to us downtown Guelph for this program, in this order…
Wyndham St North (Woolwich to Carden) - 34 banners
Quebec St - 12 banners
Carden St (Wellington to Wilson) - 15 banners
Macdonell (Wellington to Norfolk) - 20 banners
Norfolk (Norwich to Wilson) - 31 banners
Gordon (Wilson to the stone bridge) - 56 banners
If we need more and the downtown area is covered, we will then negotiate with the City of Guelph for other suitable locations.
THE BANNERS WILL DISPLAY...
A picture of the Veteran (or a silhouette if a picture is not available)
Name of the veteran, the era of service example WWI, WWII, Korean War etc
Branch of the military the veteran was involved with and Names of the banner sponsors
Each banner will be double-sided and in colour.
Those sponsoring the banners will pay the subscribed amount of $175 to cover all costs. (No benefit or cost to the Legion)
The DGBA look after the mounting and taking down of the banners, at NO additional cost.
If you are interested in sponsoring a Veteran's Banner, please contact the Guelph Legion at email@example.com for an application form.

The banners will ultimately be the property of the subscriber if they wish to have the banner at the end of the program (5 years). Note: if the subscriber does not want to take the banner at the end of the agreed mounting program and want the Legion to keep it, this will be with signed approval by the subscriber.
